Dominion Energy, Inc. (D - Free Report) emphasized regulatory progress, offshore wind execution and growing electricity demand during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call. Management maintained its long-term financial outlook while providing updates on the proposed NextEra Energy merger and major infrastructure investments.

The discussion highlighted construction timelines, regulatory scrutiny and expanding data center commitments, alongside stronger near-term earnings expectations.

D Raises Expectations Within 2026 Guidance Range

Executive vice president and chief financial officer Steven Ridge said Dominion Energy expects full-year operating earnings in the upper half of its original guidance range of $3.45-$3.69 per share.

Management attributed the improved outlook to stronger electricity sales, favorable weather, renewable fuel tax credits and operational execution. Existing credit, dividend and long-term growth guidance remained unchanged.

Dominion Energy’s third-quarter operating earnings reached $1.28 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.20. Revenues totaled $5.62 billion, surpassing the $4.80 billion consensus estimate.

Dominion Energy Defends NextEra Merger Amid Regulatory Scrutiny

Chairman, president and chief executive officer Robert Blue reiterated confidence in the proposed NextEra Energy combination, with closing still anticipated in the second half of 2027.

Dominion Energy outlined enhanced Virginia customer benefits, including extended residential bill credits, additional energy assistance and workforce investments. Virginia regulators are scheduled to issue a final order by Jan. 11, 2027.

During questions from Wells Fargo concerning regulatory conditions and potential deal obstacles, Blue emphasized that the transaction meets the statutory standard of avoiding customer harm. He declined to address individual contentious provisions ahead of formal rebuttal testimony.

D Maintains Offshore Wind Timeline Despite Delays

Blue reported that the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project was approximately 85% complete, with 44 turbines installed and generating capacity exceeding 640 megawatts.

Weather disruptions and vessel maintenance slowed installations during September and October. Nevertheless, management maintained its year-end 2027 completion target and $11.65 billion budget, including $123 million of unused contingency.

Responding to Goldman Sachs, Ridge explained that the remaining construction schedule accommodates approximately 30-95 days for weather, maintenance and installation complications. Blue highlighted improving turbine installation efficiency, reinforcing management's confidence in project execution.

Dominion Energy Sees Sustained Data Center Demand

Ridge reported more than 54 gigawatts of data center capacity across various contracting stages, including over 12 gigawatts secured through electric service agreements.

Contracted capacity increased by more than 6 gigawatts, or 13%, since year-end 2025. Weather-normalized electricity sales across Dominion Energy's Virginia and South Carolina operations increased 3.4% over the trailing 12 months.

Management emphasized that Virginia's approved large-load framework requires major electricity consumers to contribute appropriately toward infrastructure investments, limiting cost transfers to existing customers and reducing stranded-asset exposure.

D Expands Storage Plans and Capital Opportunities

Blue said Dominion Energy's updated Virginia resource plan accelerated 4 gigawatts of solar generation and 2 gigawatts of battery storage compared with its previous preferred plan.

During the Jefferies exchange, Ridge explained that planned battery capacity for 2030-2034 increased from 850 megawatts to 3.3 gigawatts. He characterized each gigawatt as representing approximately $2.5-$3 billion in potential investment.

Although some development would involve power purchase agreements, management expects most projects to follow a utility-owned structure. The expanded program therefore presents additional capital investment opportunities as Dominion Energy updates future spending plans.

Dominion Energy Awaits Millstone Contract Decision

Blue highlighted the financial benefits of Millstone's existing Connecticut power purchase agreement, which is expected to deliver customer savings exceeding $245 million during 2026.

Management estimated cumulative savings above $900 million across the contract's 10-year duration, supported by lower electricity prices.

Responding to Barclays, Ridge indicated that regulatory developments should provide greater clarity by year-end, although the timing and details of any public announcement remain uncertain.

D Emphasizes Execution and Financial Discipline

Management's overarching message centered on meeting financial commitments, completing offshore wind construction and securing constructive regulatory outcomes.

Ridge also described 2027 and 2028 as relatively lighter years for equity issuance, maintaining the company's previously communicated financing expectations.
